The migration from Dumnonia to Amorica referred to in the poems, commonly known as the migration of Britons to Brittany, took place during the early medieval period. It occurred primarily in the 5th and 6th centuries. Anglo-Saxon invasions and military pressure prompted the Britons to seek refuge and establish new settlements in Armorica, now modern-day Brittany in France. This historical event marked a significant cultural and demographic shift in both regions. As Celtic Britons did not write down many documents. Stories were passed on vocally, via stories or plays & sometimes poems. This episode is best described in a poem:
In times of old, when darkness loomed,
A tale of migration, hardship consumed,
From Dumnonia's shores to Amorica's expanse,
People sought refuge, fleeing Anglo-Saxon advance.
Amidst peaceful lands, strife whispered near,
As invaders arrived, bathed in blood and fear,
Anglo-Saxon warriors, hungry for conquest,
Dumnonia's people sought safety, a sacred quest.
They left behind their homes and fertile grounds,
Bound by history's tide, where destiny resounds,
A journey perilous, across the vast sea,
Leaving behind loved ones, yearning to be free.
Through treacherous waves, their ships sailed,
Carrying hopes and dreams, with courage unveiled,
In desperate search for sanctuary anew,
Amorica beckoned with promises true.
Families uprooted, their hearts heavy with sorrow,
But united in purpose, they faced tomorrow,
A proud heritage carried, a legacy to preserve,
In foreign lands, their culture would never swerve.
Amorica welcomed these weary souls,
Offering solace, to make them whole,
Embracing the migrants with open arms,
Promising safety, shielding them from harm.
They settled on new soil, with hope and will,
Building their lives and dreams with skill,
Their ancient language whispered in the breeze,
Connecting their past and present with ease.
From Dumnonia to Amorica's embrace,
A tale of resilience and unyielding grace,
Through migration's storm, a flame held bright,
Preserving traditions, their spirit took flight.
So let us remember their brave endeavour,
Their courage and strength that shall endeavour,
For in their journey, we find courage anew,
And honour their legacy, forever renewed.
